As sophomores in high school they heard classmates express views that did not reflect the reality of racism that people today are experiencing. They want people to feel proud of their own background while also taking the time to listen to other people’s stories, no matter who they are. So current events and even the election. It’s not like you’re literate and you’re done or you’re not. On the other hand, a lot of people talk about race without recognizing how their individual story is part of a larger narrative of systematic injustice. So, when we started out that is what we encountered but afterwards, when we started exposing the reality of race relations in America, we discovered a lot of students who had this burden on their shoulders and have since joined the movement. WG: We like to call it a racial literacy toolkit and a textbook. We wanted to make sure that our stories (in the textbook) were applicable to students all over America. We chatted with the two young activists about racial literacy, their textbook, the importance of diverse stories, their hopes for the future, and more. It’s so bizarre to us that we’re taught how to be literate in science, math, finance, music, art, etc., but never equipped with the fundamental life skills to better live together and love one another. We believe that fundamental to racial literacy is this longer idea of racial ​and intersectional literacy​ and leadership — understanding how race operates within a web of other parts of our identities and how we can take lead ourselves to dismantle all of those systems together. Racial literacy, they said, has two different barriers: a heart gap and a mind gap. We feel that social justice work is lifelong work and we hope to continue Choose for the rest of our lives.
