It took close to 3 hours between the TC highway and Longview allowing for stops to see the scenery and waiting for the wildlife and livestock to move off the road. Beautiful pictures. It’s a great day trip to add on to any visit to Banff or Calgary. @Irene The good thing about this drive over the weekend is that traffic was minimal so it was super easy to pull over an get shots. I also enjoyed Blue Rock, west of Turner Valley. What a scenic road. The climb up and over Highwood Pass is also a great one for cyclists, especially before June 15th when you have the road to yourself. There was still snow off the road near the summit and was late June. The pass is closed each year from December to June 15 to protect wildlife. @Juergen How often do we all miss some of the best things an area has to offer – only to find out about them later? It can easily be done as a day trip from Calgary, Canmore or Banff and it doesn’t matter what direction you drive it. @Makendra There is a gas station a short drive from the bottom of the Highwood Pass as you are heading towards the Trans-Canada Highway. Kananaskis Trail runs through the pass, and offers access to a multitude of camping grounds and recreational areas. Extensive hiking, an RV park, campgrounds and the Nakiska Ski Resort are all located along this section of road. The Highwood Pass is the highest point of the highway with an elevation of 2,206 m (7,238 ft). It passes through the entire stretch of Kananaskis Country, crosses Highwood Pass, and heads to Highwood Junction, where the road turns into Highway 541. With numerous picnic stops along the road, it’s also easy to find trails to the river – where you see the area from a very different perspective. I was meeting a group at 8 AM at the junction of Highway 541 and Highway 22 – also called the Cowboy Trail. Few cars were driving the road, though groups of motorcyclists were out enjoying the good weather. For those who hike, there are a number of excellent trails that start at the paved. The animals both wild and livestock were right in the middle of the road. Those roads dwarfed by snowy mountains look so beautiful. Starting from the same trailhead you can do the hike to Grizzly Col or Grizzly Peak if you’re up for it. I’d love to visit Canada one day and drive those roads. We did the drive a couple weeks ago for the first time and was so happy we did. There are excellent trails on each side of the highway, but even if you just park the car and look around, the views are out of this. This is the Highwood Pass on Hiway 40. It's an incredible drive. The road to Highwood Pass was closed in 2013  though fortunately the road was fixed by 2014. I said Wow a lot with many of these beautiful photos but those sunrise shots were just breathtaking.
